About AT&T (Formerly Cingular Wireless)

AT&T, formerly Cingular Wireless, is the largest wireless company within the United States and the second largest in Puerto Rico. The company currently has more than 61 million subscribers. Cingular Wireless was headquartered in Atlanta, GA but now that it has fully merged with AT&T, it is now headquartered out of San Antonio, TX.

AT&T, formerly Cingular, operates using GSM, GPRS, and high speed EDGE networks, which other companies such as T-Mobile also use. This is in comparison to Sprint, Nextel and Verizon who operate using PCS and CDMA.

AT&T aggressively markets its network as "Your world. Delivered." It also heavily markets that its wireless network has the fewest dropped calls. AT&T is also slowly trying to phase out, the "rollover" plan, letting customers accumulate their unused minutes from month to month, which made Cingular / AT&T so popular and stand out from the rest. AT&T is attempting to replace this with unlimited calling to all other AT&T wireless and landline subscribers, which is a very large number of subscribers, over 100 million, now that AT&T also owns Bell South. This plan is known as the AT&T Unity Plan.

This is not the first time AT&T and Cingular have come together. AT&T Wireless was purchased by Cingular in early 2004 for $41 billion. With Cingular acquiring all of the AT&T Wireless customers, it became the nations largest cell phone carrier, with 46 million wireless subscribers. In 2005, AT&T announced it was purchasing SBC. Then in 2006 AT&T also purchased Bell South, who owned most of Cingular, along with SBC. Now that AT&T fully owns SBC and Bell South, they have decided to rebrand Cingular as AT&T again! I know it's confusing, but thats how it went!

(With AT&T having the most subscribers, it also means that it has the most customers downloading ringtones!)

AT&T is the exclusive carrier of the immensely popular Apple iPhone for the next 3 to 5 years.
